This lacquerware beauty belonged to my mom. She received it as a gift many decades ago. From what I understand, it was made sometime in the early 20th century. There is no makers mark. Well cared for, it has been used but not abused and displays very little discernible wear on the exterior. There is a spot or two of wear on the top’s inner lip that rests on the bottom portion of the box (where one lifts and replaces the top to retrieve an item), see photos. For a piece that is 100 years old it looks marvelous, what do you think? Being handcrafted, the shape is an irregular square measuring about 3¼” x 3½” W/D and just over 2” high; weight 5¾ oz. Hand painted and made from lacquered wood with a porcelain inlay top; exterior colors are “cinnabar red” (not vermillion), black and gold; interior and bottom is solid black; porcelain inlay is blue and white.
