This is a fabulous vintage parsons dining table clad in the iconic "Bacterio" plastic laminate that Ettore Sottsass designed in1978 for Italian manufacturer Abet Laminati. For the print, Sottsass used inspiration from the surface texture and form of a Buddhist temple in Madurai, India, he then abstracted this detail into the squiggles he named Bacterio.
Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) founded Memphis Milano, a postmodern collaborative design and architecture group active in the 1980s whose work is showcased at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Design Museum in London.
Many widely recognized Memphis designs feature Sottsass' plastic laminates, including the "Bacterio" pattern used on this parsons dining table.
The dining table has a rectangular top and 4 straight square legs. The table is made of plywood covered in Bacterio plastic laminate in a colorway of white and gray. The table is unsigned.
The circa 1980s table is in very good vintage condition. Very sturdy, strong, and ready for immediate use. The plastic laminate is quite durable and easy to clean, designed for high-traffic surfaces. There are faint scratches on the table top if you look at the table at an acute angle. There are sections of laminate loss on the legs that are camoflauged with white paint to match. Please see photos for more details about condition.
The table measures 60" long, 36" wide, and 29" tall with a knee clearance of 26 inches. The table can seat 6 people comfortably.
It does not look like the legs can be removed from the table for transport without damaging the laminate. less
