Sir Stephen was the father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. A pre-eminent English scholar, he was inspired by Darwin's "Origin of the Species" to speculate on moral philosophy based on evolution. Originally published in 1882, this Victorian book was criticized by Religious philosophers who were horrified by Darwin's theory. This book is in very good antique condition - clean, bright and unmarked. Both the last free paper and the inside back cover were noted by a previous owner, who also penciled check-marks (easily erased) randomly on the text. The previous owner also noted the author was knighted in 1902 (which I didn't find elsewhere in researching the author and the book).
