Bisque porcelain found new life during the Victorian era with the development of Parian, a material that enabled unglazed porcelains to resemble marble from Paros, Greece, traditionally used for classical sculpture. This resulted in the production of neoclassical artwork in the Parian medium popularizing classical Greek and Roman works and themes at a price accessible to the growing middle class.
This is one example, an antique Victorian (late 19th C) white bisque Parian porcelain figure of a neoclassical woman at a well with a two-handled urn carved with a Greek key pattern, made in Britain. Measures 12 inches H x 7 W x 5 D.
She is a fine tabletop size--not too big or small. The figure has a lovely movement to her, as she leans and is about to pick up the weight of the jug. This version also features a necklace, which other similar renditions of the subject do not. Note the lovely details of the drapery she wears and the texture of the rock outcropping.
Clean with zero damage; typical wear due to being 100+ years old. less
