A nice pair of French 1930s art deco wall lights in nickel plated solid brass or bronze holding beautiful shades in frosted molded-pressed glass. The shades were acid frosted and then polished by hand to create glossy highlights. This model slip shade is never signed like many other models of the large glass factory of Etablissements Jean Gauthier , EJG.
The mounts were made by a large French company in bronze art deco lighting that often used the foundry marks BEV. So far we have not traced back the name of this firm and never a product catalog was found. All the BEV marked lamps chandeliers and sconces we have seen over the years always had Jean Gauthier made shades. The mounts of this pair of sconces are marked BEV 260.
The sconces are 36 cm (14,1 inches) high. 18 cm (7,1") wide and 8 cm (3,1") deep. They are in very good condition. The mountings still have their original nickel plating. Of course it shows it's 100 years old. It turned mat greyish and spotty. But still in excellent state given its age. I can re-plate them on request. Although I personally see no need as they are nice as is. The wall lamps come rewired. I placed American candelabra base sockets.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
