Description: Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) was a French painter and one of the most prominent figures of the post-war art movement. Known … more Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) was a French painter and one of the most prominent figures of the post-war art movement. Known for his distinctive, often somber style, Buffet primarily worked in figurative painting, creating works characterized by sharp lines, exaggerated features, and a melancholic tone. His early success came in the 1950s, when he became known for his expressive portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. Despite being celebrated by collectors and critics in the early part of his career, Buffet's reputation saw fluctuations as the art world shifted toward abstract and conceptual movements. His oeuvre includes thousands of works, and his themes ranged from religious motifs to depictions of clowns, landscapes, and everyday scenes. Buffet became highly successful commercially, but his popularity waned in the avant-garde circles due to his adherence to figurative art during a time when abstraction was dominant.
