Takatori ware is traditionally characterised by earthy tones decorated with natural glazes. Originating from the late 16th century, it was developed under the kirei-sabi aesthetic and guidance of tea master Kobori Enshū, thus elevating Takatori ware's position in the world of tea ceramics. A glaze most delectable: on a hot summer day, bees and wasps were drawn to the glaze of this bowl, leaving their mark and enhancing the surface in a natural process that elevated the piece to embody "shizen".
This guinomi showcases a unique blue tonal gradation which pools in the centre. Close inspection reveals a multitude of intrigue resulting from the glaze transformations. The use of multiple natural glazes retains the capacity for originality, culminating in this original glaze style here known as Tenmitsu (Celestial Honey). Inspired by Tenmoku bowls and the convention of "janome" or "snake's eye" at the bottom of sake cups, the unpredictable blue flushes of glaze, transformed by flame create a beautiful intrigue to enhance one's drinking experience.
