Takatori ware is a light stoneware traditionally characterised by earthy tones and decorated with natural glazes. Originating from the late 16th century, it was developed under the kirei-sabi aesthetic and guidance of tea master Kobori Enshū, thus elevating Takatori ware's position in the world of tea ceramics.
This gohan-chawan showcases a unique blue tonal gradation which pools in the centre. A belt of blue-wisp coloured glaze wraps around the body of the bowl.
The use of multiple natural glazes retains the capacity for originality, culminating in this original glaze style here known as Tenmitsu (Celestial Honey). Inspired by Tenmoku bowls and the convention of "janome" or "snake's eye" at the bottom of sake cups, the unpredictable blue flushes of glaze, transformed by flame create a beautiful intrigue to enhance one's drinking experience.
