Bird’s eye Maple is one of the rarest woods in the world. Its small knots that look like bird’s eyes and give the wood a tridimensional effect occur in less than one percent of all Maple trees. They are believed to originate from drops of sap that were trapped in the tree trunks during spring and frozen during the rigid North-American winters. The pattern varies from tree to tree, hence its uniqueness. Bird’s eye maple is particularly suited for dyeing, which brings out the texture beautifully, turning the veneer into an iridescent and luminescent surface, like silk or velvet.
