About the artist:
Stanley William Hayter was a noted English painter and printmaker associated in the 1930s with Surrealism and from 1940 onward with Abstract Expressionism. Regarded as one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th century, in 1927 Hayter founded the Atelier 17 studio in Paris, the most influential print shop of the Period. Hayter thought that printmaking was not simply a method of reproduction but was rather a form of artistic creation. He is credited for pioneering 'viscosity printing', a multi-color printing technique.
