Shino ware is a type of Japanese pottery that originated in the 16th century in Mino Province. Known for its thick white glazes, red scorch marks, and a textured surface, Shino was the first white glaze used in Japanese ceramics. The pottery fell out of favour in the 17th century but experienced a revival in the 20th century, particularly in American pottery studios. Shino glazes are characterised by their milky white to orange colour, often featuring grey "carbon trap" spots from the firing process.
This joyful set of five yunomi are decorated in the characteristic Shino glaze. A hand-brushed motif of a harvest scene adorns the facing side. A good set. less
