Known for its thick white glazes, red scorch marks, and a textured surface, Shino was the first white glaze used in Japanese ceramics. The pottery fell out of favor in the 17th century but experienced a revival in the 20th century, particularly in American pottery studios. Shino glazes are characterised by their milky white to orange colour, often featuring grey "carbon trap" spots from the firing process.

This joyful dish is decorated with a characteristic milky and rusty Shino glaze. A hand-brushed motif of a bamboo tree adorns the facing side; the body of the dish was split and overlapped to create a tapered form. A wonderful piece. Original signed box included. less
