Takatori ware is traditionally characterised by earthy tones decorated with natural glazes. Originating from the late 16th century, it was developed under the kirei-sabi aesthetic and guidance of tea master Kobori Enshū, thus elevating Takatori ware's position in the world of tea ceramics.
This chawan showcases a unique blue tonal gradation which invokes the feeling of tortoiseshell. The use of multiple natural glazes retains the capacity for originality, culminating in this original glaze style here known as Ao-Togōsan (Blue-Hare's Fur). Inspired by Tenmoku bowls and the convention of "janome" or "snake's eye" at the bottom of sake cups, the unpredictable blue flushes of glaze, transformed by flame create a beautiful intrigue to enhance one's tea drinking experience.
