True to Moorcroft’s artistic philosophy, the focus here is on line and texture. Moorcroft used a “tubelining” technique – squeezing thin lines of clay onto the piece – to create the curving edges of the flowers and foliage, adding subtle dimension. The delicate colors complement the design’s fluidity - the cornflowers, in shades of blue and green, are set gracefully on the soft blue background. Moorcroft himself, a graduate of what is now the Royal College of Art in London, stated: ”To be simple in decoration is always to be in good taste.” This example of art pottery strikes that delicate balance. Moorcroft was known to export his best wares, in this case to American retailer Spaulding & Company, goldsmiths who also maintained a Paris branch. An exquisite example of early 20th century Art Nouveau.
