It was part of a deco set rescued from an abandoned house in central PA, on a property that my wife’s aunt and uncle had purchased. The woman who owned the house and items had no heirs, and the house, with all of its possessions, was “returning to nature.”

VERY rough when we found them, we threw them in the back of my father in law’s pickup and transported them to our 1925 house in Philadelphia, where they waited in the garage until we found an upholsterer. We had secured the new velvet upholstery—celadon green and ruby red. And then our upholsterer brought them back to life, perhaps better than ever.

They did their job for us. We’ve raised our kids. Our tastes have evolved a bit. Mostly there’s a slight mismatch in two dimensions—they are a too low for our very tall people and yet have always been a bit larger than our narrow living room requires.

Yes, it is time to say goodbye, but these humble, everyday things-of-beauty deserve to flourish again.

It has survived two children and three cats remarkably well, but there are blemishes. The cushions could use a refresh in terms of support. And our red friend needs a bit more structural rehabbing in the seat, which we notice when larger bodies sit down.

Tears will be shed when these seats leave our home. But our best hope is that they find another caretaker to chairish them as they deserve.
