This exceptional suite … more We are really excited to offer this magnificent Art Deco Scandinavian bedroom suite dating to the 1930’s. This exceptional suite is new to the market having been in the same family from new. It originates from Scandinavia and is veneered in rare and exotic pale Thuya veneers. The suite comprises a super king size bed (6 ft wide), complete with a central support and 4 slated panels on which the mattresses sit neatly (not supplied, mattresses shown are for display only). The bed is veneered in Thuya as are the side rails which slot firmly into the head and footboard producing a very strong and sturdy frame. The headboard and footboard are bordered by a very fine line of gold laquer and the whole raised on original ebonised and gold accented outswept feet. Further, included are original to the suite matching bedsides again completely veneered to the top, sides snd shelves in Thuya. They are a very attractive design which sits beautifully with todays styles. The pair of cabinets both have drop down doors which reveal a good sized cupboard and the door producing another surface when down. The handles are absolutely original, wooden,ebonised examples in really lovely condition as are the catches and hinges (the hinges have been taken off, serviced and refitted to ensure everything works beautifully. Beneath, each have asymmetric open cupboard/shelves which are very decorative in their own right\.
Finally, this suite includes its original chest of drawers again stunning to look at being veneered in the most wonderful examples of Thuya veneer Which is of a pale blonde colouration. The chest matches the bed and bedsides perfectly, again original to the suits. It comprises of 3 long graduated drawers constructed in pale beechwood with birch liners. All the drawers run as smooth as silk. with the drawers removed the interior of the chest almost looks new in condition which is testament to how well the suite has been cared for during its life. Again raised on original ebonised feet with gold laquer line accents.
We are so delighted to offer this as suites of this quality really don’t turn up that often and especially in this condition. Thuya is a rare exotic wood from Morocco and is the only wood mentioned in the Bible. It only grows in the forests of the Atlas Mountains East of Essaouira. Thuya wood was highly praised by Romans and Greeks and its oils were used in religious ceremonies. The burrs are moved from mountainous areas on mules and donkeys as they are the only form of transportation suitable for the task. Research into its desireability in Rome reveals that the precious wood Thuya was used for the construction of a commissioned table in 100 BC by Marcus Tulius Cicero, a noted Roman statesman paying 300 000 denarii (60,000 dollars) for the table made from this native wood of Morocco and Algerias Atlas Mountains.
