The canvas, characterized by profound religiosity and severe composure, expresses the dictates of the Church of Rome after the Council of Trent. It has stringent analogies with similar works painted by Bernardino Campi, to whose circle the work can be traced back. Among others, his students were Andrea Mainardi, Giovanni Battista Trotti known as Malosso and Sofonisba Anguissola. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
