"In my opinion, the painting that is called abstract is not an ism, as there have been many of them recently, it is neither a 'style' nor an 'epoch' in the history of art, but simply a new means of expression, a different human language - and more direct than the earlier painting." (Hans Hartung)
Hans Hartung is one of the few artists who have worked exclusively in informal forms throughout their lives. He began his studies in philosophy and art history at the University of Leipzig in 1924, then moved to the academies of fine arts in Leipzig and Dresden. In 1928, Hartung continued his training with the painter Max Doerner in Munich. During this time, spontaneous, emblematic line compositions were created in which the artist was guided by the inspiration of chance and examined the tension between color surface and line. After a long stay on the island of Menorca, Hartung moved to Paris in 1932. Here he met Kandinsky, Mondrian, Miró and Calder and took part in the exhibitions in the "Salon des Surindépendants". When war broke out, Hartung joined the Foreign Legion in 1939 and, seriously wounded, returned to Paris in 1945, where he took on French citizenship. During these years, he created images with floating color fields overlaid by bundles of calligraphic lines. from 1949, Hartung took part in important exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, Munich and Basel. In the years 1955-64 he was represented at the documenta in Kassel. In 1956, Hartung was honored with the “Prix Guggenheim” and appointed as an extraordinary member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. In 1960 he received the Grand International Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale. In the 1960s, monochrome color surfaces were created into which Hartung carved rows of parallel grooves, adding a sculptural quality to the calligraphic quality. Hartung published his memoirs in the book “Autoportrait” in 1976. A year later he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in 1981 he received the Oskar Kokoschka Prize of the Republic of Austria. The large number of awards that Hartung's artistic work received during his lifetime shows that he is an artist of international standing. In 1989 he died as one of the most important representatives of European Informel.
