The engraving depicts the res & hotel of James M. Hagee of Hillsboro, Illinois (currently called the "Red Rooster Inn).
In 1825 James Rutledge opened an English tavern on the site of the property called the "Tiger Inn." In 1851, James M. Hagee bought the property and the hotel became known as the Hagee House. The property was later sold once more. In 1883 Mary Pollard purchased the hotel for $294 and it became known as the "City Hotel."
Under Pollard's ownership, a new hotel was constructed. The existing wooden frame building (depicted in the engraving) was broken into three section and was sold off as individual family homes when the new brick hotel was constructed. Two of those parts still exist today in Hillsboro. One piece is on Jefferson St. and the other on Summer St.
The engraving depicts a delightful scene. Guests can be seen arriving and departing the hotel grounds. Busy streets can be seen surrounding. The hotel has 2 signs, one referring to it as the "City Hotel" and the other as the "HG Brown. Hotel."
This item comes framed with velvet matting around.
