This is a gem of a painting! The scene shows a group of well dressed and wigged gentlemen, both seated and standing, around a card table. Discarded cards of every suit are strewn on the floor. A fireplace roars in the bottom right. The room decor is detailed and includes elements such as a Rococo style mantelpiece, ormolu mantel clock, and landscape paintings. The facial expressions and body language of the gentlemen suggest one is being called out by the others. I wonder why?

Knoop was a portrait and genre painter who specialized in Rococo scenes. He studied at the Academy Munich from 1876 to 1880 From 1886 to 1888 Knoop studied with Fernand Corman in Paris, subsequently returning to Germany.

At Christie's Auction 5403, on 24 January 2008 - Nineteenth Century European Art a 10.75""h x 13""w oil on panel (Lot 99) by Knoop titled ""A Toast"" realized a record price for his work of GBP 8,750.
