David Hockney ( B. 1937 ) is an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. He is an important contributor to The Pop Art Movement of the 1960's. He is considered one of the most influential British artists of The 20th Century. His artworks have commanded greater popular acclaim than any other Contemporary British artist. The fresh appraisal of Hockney's oeuvre offered in each of this volume's six chapters, broadly chronological in sequence, is introduced by an essay that examines in depth certain aspects of Hockney's artistic practice. The complexity of his seemingly straightforward imagery is further revealed in the commentaries accompanying each of the sixty-three carefully selected color plates. Included are paintings illustrated for the first time and others that had rarely been reproduced in color. numerous black & white illustrations of related works provide important reference material. An illustrated chronology and selected bibliography conclude this lucid, authoritative account of Hockney's development as one of the most widely acclaimed of all living artists.
