The chairs of this style were designed by Mart Stam in 1927 and were the first cantilever chairs in furniture history. Starting in 1925, Stam experimented with gas pipes connected with flanges and developed the concept of cantilevered chairs that no longer stood on four legs - a design principle that marked a turning point in the history of modern furniture design.
