Absolutely stunning sculpture by Latin American Master artist Manuel Carbonell. Regarded as one on the greatest sculptors of the 20th Century, Carbonell passed away in November of 2011. Interest in his work has since sky rocketed. This 1963 piece, “Pygmalion and Galatea” was created by Carbonell for Austin Productions. Molded from Durastone, with a painted glaze finish that resembles exotic hardwood. Signed by the artist “Carbonell”, this was a limited run work of art, produced only in 1963 — during the height of Carbonell’s career. Few of these have survived. Truly a rare, and remarkable piece for any collector of Cuban or Modern art.

Carbonell passed away in November of 2011. Interest in his work has since sky rocketed. This 1963 piece, “Pygmalion and Galatea” was created by Born in Cuba in 1918, the artist studied at Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana, Cuba with equally esteemed contemporaries, Wifredo Lam and Agustin Cardenas. His talents led him to become a celebrity in his native Cuba. However Carbonell was exiled to the U.S. following Castro’s rise. Here Carbonell’s notoriety really took flight. Ultimately he was featured in several one man shows at the much famed Schoneman Galleries, MoMA, Galeria Internacional (Venezuela), Randall Galleries, among several others. Other notable works include the “Bicentennial Eagle” presented at the White House and now on display at The Gerald R. Ford, Presidential Museum. Miami is home to one of Carbonell’s most public works, The Pillar of History on the Brickell Avenue Bridge. less
