Silver Gelatine Print by Erich Andres, 1957. This black-and-white photograph from 1957 captures the bustling Plaza de España in Barcelona, Spain. In the foreground, a grand traffic circle surrounds a large fountain adorned with sculptures and ornate details. Several classic cars, trucks, and trams navigate the roundabout, showcasing the vibrant urban activity of the time. In the background, the two Venetian Towers stand prominently, marking the entrance to the grand avenue leading to the Palau Nacional, which sits atop the hill in the distance. The Palau Nacional, home to the National Art Museum of Catalonia, overlooks the entire scene. The surrounding architecture reflects the grand style of the early 20th century, with colonnades and monumental buildings lining the plaza. The scene is a dynamic snapshot of Barcelona in the late 1950s, capturing both the city’s historical landmarks and the daily life of its residents, set against a backdrop of iconic architecture and urban design. Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
