With our highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this mid to late 19th century antique table. The entire table is constructed with Southern walnut lumber with a selection of American Southern hardwood used to form the drawer box. We have provided a photo of the underside of the drawer, which has experienced significant oxidation, to expressly boast the considerable age of this table as well as the exceptional figured grain which the drawer panel exhibits. Furniture constructed in the American countryside is more likely to have secondary panels of unusually high quality since old growth lumber was widely available for a time. Special care was given in the examination process to ensure the drawer panel is original to the overall table. The presence of 19th century hand forged nails with blackened oxidation marks seeped into the wood around it is a clear indication of age and originality. The blackening of the wood around each nail head takes place due to an interaction between the moisture in the lumber against the iron nail. This subtle detail is exactly what you'd hope to find when authenticating an antique table.
This table features an adaption of the Sheraton design style made in the American south at some time during the 19th century. The table is an interesting and unusual formed example with a lower and more elongated format compared to most other similarly styled tables. The reason for this format is likely for its intended use as a bedside table made specifically for the needs of someone resting in an antique bed. The table features a well-constructed single drawer as well as finely turned legs complete with ringlets and compressed ball design. The underside of each leg demonstrates considerable oxidation which is an important consideration as many antique tables are reduced in height over time. This bedside table measures 27 1/4" wide x 18 1/2" deep x 23 1/2" tall overall. less
