Walking Thunder (born Juanita Peters) is a Dine' Medicine Woman. She has dedicated her life to learning and teaching the wisdom of the Dine' people, as well as healing in the ancient traditions of her people. She is known as a powerful healer, an accomplished sandpainter, and an inpirational teacher. She studied with her elders since her childhood and has an intense connection to Mother Earth. She has a deep knowledge of plant medicine, sand painting traditions, and prayer and ceremony. She truly walks in “ The Beauty Way” carrying the wisdom of the ancient tradition to bring this forth for helping us to “ remember”.
Walking Thunder, born Juanita Peters, is the subject of a book bearing her name, which tells of her history as one of nine women who create sand paintings for healing in the Dine, Navajo tradition.
Sand paintings originate from Navajo healing ceremonies. The medicine man/woman builds a sandpainting and places the patient in the middle of it. To aid in the healing process, sand from the sandpainting is rubbed over certain parts of the patient's body. When the ceremony is over, the sandpainting is destroyed, thereby destroying the illness. Sand paintings are very detailed and colorful and each figure carries a special meaning. The designs are made up of many subjects familiar to the Navajo people. Colors used in the sandpaintings contain every color of the rainbow and are made from many different sources such as colored rocks, roots, flowers, sand, bark, ashes, cactus. The amazing detailed and complex Navajo symbol of healing has been broadened into a unique art form to be appreciated by many. The patient absorbs powers depicted and the sand is then returned to the Earth. Demonstration pieces and those made for sale do not carry such powers, but illustrate the use of natural colored sands. less
