There is an old saying in the ranking of tea bowls: “First Ido, second Hagi, third Karatsu”. Karatsu ware finds its origin in the area surrounding Kishidake Castle, under the auspices of the Hata family, from the late Muromachi period and into the Momoyama period.
Since Karatsu Ware is made of coarse clay, the impression of it is vigorous yet beautifully simple.
This set is a Chosen-Karatsu ware or Korean-style Karatsu ware. Two types of glaze - iron glaze and straw ash glaze are used. Iron glaze is poured over the raw clay first, followed by straw ash glaze (spot glaze), which is poured above the layer of iron glaze. The artwork created from the fusion between the two different types of glaze is Chōsen-garatsu.
Provenance: private artist kiln in Karatsu City (saga prefecture)-Japan.
Highly collectable. One-of-its kind, not mass produced.
