ARTIST BIO:
Massachusetts-based artist Mimi Pinheiro creates bold expressionist works that emphasize rich hues, strong lines, and raw emotion. Her diverse portfolio includes paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, all utilizing handmade pigments.

Mimi grew up in New Bedford, MA, a city renowned for its whaling legacy, burly fishermen, rich immigrant cultures, and the rise and fall of its textile industry. In 2017, she moved to Mexico City to pursue a lifelong dream of studying painting in a traditional apprenticeship setting.

She spent five years under the mentorship of Mexican master José 'Pepe' Barbosa from the Collective Grupo Suma, known for its association with the legendary social muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros. Mimi is now an active member of the Mexico City-based collective El Quinto Piso and her work is featured in galleries both nationally and internationally. Recently, she returned to her hometown and now creates art in a studio located in a former textile mill.

Mimi's pigments are often handmade using materials such as eggs, honey, and naturally occurring substances. Her signature deep red paint is made from Grana Cochinilla, a pigment derived from the beetle that lives on the Nopal cactus, highly prized since the 2nd Century BC.

Mimi's paintings and drawings contribute to the expanding body of figurative work from a non-male-centric perspective, supporting the cultural shift towards valuing artifacts, information, and viewpoints from historically marginalized and less represented voices. Her unusual family history—including whalers, volcanic eruption refugees, and her upbringing in the Azorean-American diaspora—deeply influences her work.
