These vintage items … more Vintage pair Art Deco dog bookends, depicting Disney Pluto, verdigris bronze & solid marble, 1930`s ca, French.
These vintage items have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are ready to use.
These vintage bookends have several distinctive original French Art Deco design features: the 1930`s dog sculptures, elegant proportions, luxury materials, quality casting & heavy weight.
It is a rare & unusual pair as most vintage French Art Deco bookends from the period depict various animals but not as in this case a fun Disney cartoon character such as Pluto. Perhaps it was a private commission.
With the cartoon animal theme & sculptural presence, these bookends would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Country, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Post Modern, Industrial or Contemporary.
The design is humorous, classic, timeless and decorative. Each bookend combines a solid bronze Pluto sculpture with an L shaped plinth in solid polished marble. The external rectangular portions of the plinth in stunning warm tone Red Alicante veined marble, the vertical panel is chamfered. The small plinth where the dog sculpture stands is in polished beige onyx.
Both dog sculptures are in solid bronze with a verdigris finish and both are stamped "BRONZE". Each figure in a different playful sitting greeting position. The quality & detail of the cast is superb and the dogs have a very cute expression.
These bookends have a good weight and each solid bronze figure is individually quality cast.
New black felt is present underneath each base to protect the surfaces below.
These bookends sell together and the price is for the pair. The books are for display only and not included in the sale.
Both vintage bookends are in very good condition for its age. The original vintage patina has been preserved. The bronze sculptures are in very good condition & sound, with the original warm verdigris antique patina present adding character. The marble bases are both sound and in good condition with no damages or cracks, only minor superficial marks, tiny loses & rubbing in line with age & wear.
Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport each bookend would be wrapped separately in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. THE ANIMAL THEME IN FRENCH ART DECO
In the early 20th Century French artists drew inspiration from distant lands. “Art Deco” was a new wave in visual art that first appeared in France shortly after World War I. The style was influenced by ideas and exotic imagery borrowed mostly from Africa and Asia.
