These striking plates are from the Beauties of the Red Mansion series, depicting characters from The Dream of Red Mansions written between 1755 and 1790 by Tsao Hsueh-Chin. This work was a satire of imperial feudal favoritism, revealing an insider’s contemporary portrait of access, privilege, power and corruption among China’s feudal ruling classes. Plates included:
