extraordinary oil on canvas signed by etienne ritter in the lower right corner. A european town, from the french region of alsace, is represented, following the author's characteristic style, with material brushstrokes and ethereal composition in order to capture the essence of what is represented. The houses have roofs of warm tones, predominantly red and orange, contrasting with a gray sky that suggests a cloudy atmosphere. The brushstroke is thick and pasty, giving a rich and striking texture to the surface of the canvas, creating a three-dimensional effect. The use of color is vibrant, with a warm palette that conveys a cozy and rustic atmosphere. The composition is organized into a series of simplified, primarily rectangular geometric shapes that represent the houses and church in the background, whose bell tower is a focal point.
etienne ritter (1934 – 1994)
étienne ritter was a french painter originally from sondernach, alsace. Coming from a humble family, he began painting from an early age. During his military service in algeria, he continued to develop his passion for painting. Upon his return, he decided to dedicate himself professionally to art. Ritter was notable for his alsace landscapes, particularly in spring and winter, as well as his still lifes and floral scenes. His style evolved from detailed figurative painting to the exploration of cubism and more abstract techniques, especially during the period from 1975 to 1990. Despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, he continued painting until the end of his life. His works were exhibited in multiple galleries in france, canada and other countries, and are part of public collections such as the museum of modern art in strasbourg.
