Scandinavian modern design is timeless, with its principles of minimalism, functionality, and fine craftsmanship still influencing furniture today. While famous designers like Hans Wegner and Arne Jacobsen often led the movement, Swedish designer Nils Jonsson also made significant contributions, though he remains less well-known. Jonsson’s work for Hugo Troeds AB included dining tables, cabinets, and sideboards like this Oden Teak Sideboard. Although his Trento line is a popular favorite among collectors, this Oden Sideboard is a rarer find, demonstrating exceptional attention to detail and superior craftsmanship.
Constructed from solid teak—the preferred material of Scandinavian modern designers—every detail of this sideboard reflects Jonsson’s commitment to simplicity and function. Teak, known for its strength, resistance to wear, and rich, warm grain, was the material of choice for Scandinavian modern designers, making this piece as durable as it is beautiful. The large, flat planes of rich teak grain are designed to be admired. Functional elements, like the beautifully executed box joints at each top corner, the seamless tambour sliding doors that reveal ample storage, and the expertly routed circular openings for the brass pulls, seamlessly blend form and function. Jonsson’s approach allows the teak wood to take center stage while the design interventions are subtle, refined, and quiet.
This sideboard remains in its original condition, with minor signs of age consistent with its history. Notably, there is a small repair on the front top edge, which, thanks to the beauty of the teak, is nearly imperceptible. The sideboard boasts beautiful wood grain throughout, including on the back, making it a perfect candidate for floating in a room. Inside, the sideboard features two shelves behind the tambour doors, and five dovetailed drawers of varying sizes. The first drawer retains its original felt lining and teak dividers for cutlery, in near-pristine condition. Whether used in a dining room or repurposed as a stylish entertainment unit, Jonsson’s teak masterpiece will bring warmth, serenity, and timeless elegance to any well-appointed home.
