This is one of the scenic themes of Harunobu. "Tama Gawa" - the gem stream - is the name given to any clear stream. The theme of the gem stream became popular in Haikai literature when poet Kiitsu published his "Mutama Gawa" - the Gem River of Musashi. The Edo people had a passion for their local rivers. This piece is an adaptation on the Ukiyo-E terms of the Haikai theme. The moon casts its reflection on the water and the refreshing looks of the beauty sets off the mood.
Harunobu has left a series of Tama River pictures on different locales such as the Tama.
