A Yoshiwara scene in early summer. The graceful woman standing beside the summer blind has a touch of classical beauty about her almost reminiscent of a court lady in the ancient Imperial Palace. Her little attendant seated on the bamboo porch is apparently tipping her mistress off as as to who is looking at her, the identity of the unseen patron in question is suggested by the court chariot painted at the upper right. This is another work of Harunobu custom-made for his Haikai patron named "Kinga". From the signature at the back of this saying "distributed by Sakei-Gumi", one learns that "Kinga" belonged to that school of Haikaiists. From the refined character of his pen name, Kinga may have been a man of high social status. The fact of such a picture being used as New Year gifts reveals the general high level of culture in Yoshiwara.
