These were meant to sit at the hearth of the fireplace as storage for kindling, coal and matches, however this unusual piece was created to hold shoes, keep them warm and to dry them off of dampness. Lined in green felt, black iron hinges, embossed brass overlay to wood, reads 'Where they ought to be', with a pair of embossed shoes. This is a heavy and solid piece. Measures 16" wide X 11.5" deep X 10" at height (back). Sits on 2 pieces of wood which acts as feet and raises the box 1" off the ground. This would easily hold 2-3 pair of shoes, or a numerous amount of treasures. These antique hearth boxes are becoming very collectible. Suitable for Tudor, Mission, Arts and Crafts, William Morris, interiors. See less
