It is the first fine morning after a snow fall. What has brought these women way out to the village of Oji on a freezing weather like this? The women of Edo never get old in heart, they never lose zeal for life. Armed with long weather coats and protective headwear and straw sandals, they have ventured over to this out-of-the-way place. Oji leads up to the hills of Asuka across the river Taki. The dense woods were dwelling place of foxes and badgers. The inari shrine for the fox and the will-of-the-wisp are part of the local legend. HIROSHIGE included in his "100 Views of Edo" Oji's "Ceremonial Costumed Nettle Tree and the Will-of-the-wisp on the New Year's Eve".
In this picture, the local color is represented by a comely fox doll dressed in a ceremonial costume and a mill, both souvenirs of Oji. Probably these two lovely white foxes will take the wind-mill souvenir to present to someone in their mind when they get home.
