About the artist:
American Watercolorist
A native of Los Angeles, Maxine Masterfield graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art and now lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio. Masterfield's unique style and application of watercolor have earned her numerous awards and honors. Early on she became known for her unusual and diverse use of media from inks to acrylics to watercolor. She has always laid aside conventional methods for experimentation and exploration.
Masterfield's work suggests a freedom of spirit, momentarily captured in paint. Through the use of transparent and opaque watercolors, she creates abstract pieces that give the viewer the opportunity to form their own mental image of landscapes. One can identify with seascapes, mountains, and craggy terrain as well as the delicate looks of fabrics and lace-like textures. Nature's influence in shown in such works as "Snow Mass" or "Rocky Wall" which depict earthy colors with sharp edges and high contrasts.
She has received the AWS (American Watercolor Society) High Winds Medal, the Rocky Mountain National and Foothills Art Center Award. Every major United States Watercolor exhibit has included her touch at least once, with such exhibitions as.......AWS, NWS, WATERCOLOR USA, AQUEOUS OPEN and the NATIONAL ACADEMY SHOW to her credit. Most recently she won the "Lone Star Award" at the third annual Texas National Watercolor Show.
Her vigorous and innovative style is also colorfully reproduced on the cover of the new book about 50 outstanding American Watercolorists, entitled, “Watercolor Bold & Free", edited by landscape painter, Lawrence C. Goldsmith. In another publication titled "Creative Seascape Painting" three powerful examples of her style reflect the colors and energy of great waves. Compiled by artist/author Edward Betts, they were selected as examples of a unique approach to watercolor and most aptly were named "Wrapped in Mist," Waves," and "Seablooms" definitely supporting her ties to the great outdoors.
Originality, innovation and a special inner vision are qualities which often distinguish great artists from ordinary ones. After seeing the work of Maxine Masterfield, viewers will agree she is definitely above the ordinary. less
