West German pottery, particularly from the mid-20th century, is renowned for its innovative designs, vibrant colors, and unique glazes. This pottery emerged prominently during the post-World War II era when German ceramics underwent a renaissance, driven by a combination of artistic experimentation and commercial demand. This style is well-known for its vibrant and often earthy color palettes. The glazes used were experimental, often resulting in textured surfaces that could range from glossy to matte.
Raymor was an American import and distribution company that sold modern domestic products, including pottery, from 1941 to 1980. Irving Richards, an entrepreneur from Manhattan, New York, founded Raymor as a distributor of Russell Wright Accessories in 1936. Raymor manufactured some of its products in a New Jersey factory, with many of the designs created by Richards himself. Raymor worked with many designers, including Gilbert Rohde, Donald Deskey, Walter Dorwin Teague, Ray and Charles Eames, George Nelson, and Eva Zeisel. Raymor imported modern Scandinavian and Italian designs, including work by Arne Jacobsen, Tapio Wirkaala, Hans Wegner, and Ettore Scottsass. In 1963, the furniture company Simmons bought Raymor and changed its name to Raymor Richards, Morgenthau Inc. in 1969. Raymor ended due to shifting styles, rising competition, and the departure of Richards from the company. Roseville Pottery introduced a Mid-Century Modern line of Raymor Stoneware in 1952.
