Artist bio:
Yoneshi Hieda
(1919-2005)
Japanese contemporary artist
Master of Kiri-eh, Japanese paper razor cutting art works which in 1977 he referred to as ‘Senjo-kihri-eh’ and in 1981 as a further development to his technique as ‘Hori-gami’.
Biography-
Yoneshi Hieda, born on April 23, 1919 in Aiichi-Ken, Hazugun Ishiki-cho, a small village in the central part of Japan.
Lived in Osaka, where he died on January 30, 2005.
In May of 1939 traveled to Shanghai, China to pursue his art studies and returned in 1946 to Japan and became fascinated with the ancient art of Kiri-eh (razor cuttings).
In 1947 he became a member of “Avant Garde”, an international group of painters involved in abstract art.
In 1975 he held his first major exhibit of his kiri-eh at the Gallery Miyazaki in Osaka, Japan.
In 1979 he was invited by the Gallery Sohto-sha in Tokyo which would become his other regular gallery where his work would be displayed.
Exhibits-
The last two U.S. exhibitions were at the renowned 'Morakami Museum' in Boca
Raton area of Florida in 1994 and in Coral Gables, Florida, hosted by Consul
to The Government of Japan, Mr. Hagiuda, sponsored by Agnes Youngblood of the
’Miami Performing Arts’.
Art work technique-
The paper Hieda used for his delicate razor cuttings is called ‘Washi’, is indigenous to the town of Nagoya, Japan and it was created especially for his personal use.
He would first draw the image on the reverse side of the paper and then proceed with infinite care with a blade as fine as surgeon scalpel to cut away the thinly etched lines of his drawings layer by layer, color by color. less
