Born in Hungary in 1895 and exiled to Paris in the early '20s, Marcel Vertès worked in many fields of illustration, with women at the center of his work. We find her in the glossy pages of Vogue or Harper's Bazaar magazines, in collections of Curiosa or in advertisements for Elsa Schiaparelli's perfume brand”.
The pinnacle of his career came in 1952, when his work as costume and set designer was rewarded with 2 Oscars for John Huston's film “Moulin Rouge”. A few months before his death on October 31, 1961, he was a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.
He made a name for himself in France in the mid-1920s, particularly for his lithographs and illustrations.
His real breakthrough came with an album of lithographs entitled Dancings. Among the works he illustrated were Colette's Chéri and La Vagabonde, Paul Morand's L'Europe galante and Ramón Gómez de la Serna's Le Cirque. He was associated with the Hungarian cartoonist Alex Szekely. In the 1930s, he also worked for fashion magazines such as the English edition of Vogue, the American rival Harper's Bazaar and the Gazette du Bon Ton.
