This small flamed stoneware vase is signed Alphonse Mouton. Born in 1900 into a family of potters, Alphonse Mouton worked in Saint-Vallier, in southeastern France, from the 1930s to the 1980s. He is particularly recognized for his distinctive use of glazes in colors ranging from dark blue to green and beige. His early works are reminiscent of the Art Deco period, with their geometric shapes and stylized patterns.
This 13cm high work bears the ALPHO signature under its foot, as well as the number 231.
Time has not spared it but it has been restored using the traditional kintsugi technique using Japanese lacquer and gold.
Kintsugi, a Japanese technique of repairing broken ceramics using lacquer and gold powder, celebrates the imperfections and scars of the object, giving it new life and unique beauty. This philosophy of valuing the imperfections and the history of the object finds an echo in the Art Deco aesthetic, which advocates innovation, modernity and the use of noble materials. By combining these two approaches, this vase embodies both the elegance and sophistication of Art Deco, while bearing traces of its history and restoration with a touch of luxury and refinement.
This vase is a unique piece that combines the artisanal heritage of Alphonse Mouton, the Art Deco aesthetic and the philosophy of kintsugi. It is a testimony to the art of ceramics and restoration, offering a harmonious combination of tradition and modernity.
