Large male figure with diamond head and simplified abstracted features; two beads for eyes; the nose is an extension of … more Large male figure with diamond head and simplified abstracted features; two beads for eyes; the nose is an extension of the cranial ridge. The face features a small slit for the mouth and a long tapering beard that is carved away from the cylindrical torso. The figure’s arms hang to the sides and are bent at the elbow and his truncated legs are slightly bent at the knee. The top of the head is daubed with dark material. The neck is encircled with twine. Zande figure stands approximately 22 inches high. Provenance: Estate of Thomas McNemar (1931-2020). McNemar lived and collected throughout Central and West Africa in the 1960s and 70s. He established galleries of African Art in New York and San Francisco selling to museums and public and private collections in the US and Europe. less
