With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exceptional late 19th century European School oil on canvas painting. It is our profound hope that the photographs we have provided have captured the true scale and vibrancy which this painting imbues. As with all fine antique art, the full beauty can only be appreciated with the benefit of having the work of art directly in front of you to view. This painting is a work originating from the hand of an artist working during the later part of 19th century in Europe. Our best summation is that this work depicts a village landscape situated in the Swiss Alps abutting either a lake or river featuring several ships under sail. This work is considerably reminiscent of notable works depicting The Matterhorn and the surrounding countryside. Villagers can be spied in the distant center along the shoreline staring out towards the sailing ships and additional villagers are painted into the foreground walking along a roadside bordered by a wooden fence. Presumably these villagers have some association with the distant village situated in the shadows of the prominent snow peaked mountains.
The artist brilliantly captures a distant light source illuminating the landscape from the upper right along with a strong wind which also appears to have originated from the east as made apparent by a contorting and twisted tree prominently painted onto the lower left side foreground. The illumination of the snowcapped mountains upon their eastern face along with the dazzling glow of the eastern waterfront area and the leftward side of the walking path demonstrates a mastery of impressionist talents uncommon even in an era of profoundly talents artists. This work is undoubtedly the product of an immensely talented artist as this painting greatly enhances any space which it occupies. The frame appears to be original with a spectacular form and intricate gesso worked details. The frame does have several areas of paint and gesso loss however this in no way detracts from the viewing experience of this wonderful work of art. The overall size of the work measured at the frame is 41 1/2" wide x 33 1/2" tall and projects 4 1/2" out from the wall. The sight size of the actual oil on canvas painting excluding the frame measures 31 1/4" wide x 23 1/4" tall. less
