a fisher boy from Volendam in Holland
Oil on a panel
28 x 40 cm (without frame)
unsigned, attributed to Rudolf Gudden (1853 - 1942)
German artist
made in 1901
Story:
The fisher boy is most likely the attractive man Evert Veerman (1887 - 1943) nicknamed 'Seek' -see 3 photos of Evert Veerman at an older age- he was a model for Rudolf Gudden in 1901.
'Evert was the first Volendammer who dared to divorce his wife.
In Catholic Volendam you didn't 'get rid' of your wife at that time. The reason for the divorce was because his wife, Hille Butter, had an affair with Prince Hendrik, the husband of Queen Wilhelmina,' according to Evert Schilder - Keeper of the art and identity of Art hotel Spaander.
In 1881 Leendert Spaander started the arthotel, Hotel Spaander (Volendam, NL).
Leendert invited various artists from all over the world to come to Volendam through the art academies. He provided studio space behind the hotel where they could paint. The clothing of Volendam, the sea and the landscape served as a source of inspiration for these painters. As a thank you, the artists donated paintings.
Some artists came not only for the landscape and the hotel, but also for one of Leendert Spaander's seven daughters. Three of them married an artist, namely Augustin Hanicotte, Georg Hering and Wilm Wouters.
Also Rudolf Gudden stayed in the hotel Spaander in 1892 and stayed there for a long time -see the photo of the signature in the guestbook of the hotel.
Between 1881 and the First World War, more than a thousand artists from all over the world stayed and worked here. To this day, the art collection comprises about 1.300 pieces. less
