There is a small strip of wood missing from the top left side of the case near the drawer (pictured). The feet are replaced but are high quality and fit the piece well. It has a nice, older finish and antique grape-cluster handles. less

Don't you love a piece that has its own unique character? This lovely chest has subtle but original inlay, giving it a sense of self all its own. Having inlay on the canted corners is not out of the norm, but the way the inlaid lines terminate in a curved dome at the top and a crescent at the bottom is innovative. We love small details that put the craftsperson's creativity and individuality on display. Another small detail worth appreciating are the grape clusters on the handles, which are period pieces from the early 1800s!
Made of a rich cherry and with poplar and white pine secondary woods, this chest is absolutely an American piece. While the inlay pattern is distinctive, we can't identify it more specifically other than to say it is likely made from the mid-Atlantic or northwards. The construction details such as handmade dovetail joinery and cut nails prove it was made in the early 1800s just as the Neoclassical style suggests. The creative use of inlay and tapered feet fit right in with the Neoclassical tastes of the period. While the feet are replaced as noted in the condition report, they are high quality and do not detract significantly from the value of such a finely crafted piece.
We hope you love this chest as much as we do, and that it shines in your home just as it was meant to do when it was made some 200 years ago! less
