This truly incredible antique French Art Deco wooden armoire or wardrobe cabinet was made in France by Maison Gouffé circa 1940. The cabinet is impeccably handcrafted from solid wood and Birdseye maple veneer with gorgeous grain patterning and a deep, warm honey brown tone. The cabinet has a clean, geometric design with gentle curves and simple details. Two large side doors open on spacious storage with three adjustable and removable shelves each that rest on handcrafted wooden shelving brackets. Two large lower dovetailed drawers have a gently curved profile. The center door is locking with original working key and has a full-length outer mirror with tall storage space inside. All doors and drawers feature original rectangular metal handle pulls. The entire cabinet was designed and built to disassemble into sections for easier transport and storage. This versatile cabinet and showpiece is both beautiful and functional and can be used as a clothing armoire or adapted for other uses including a storage cabinet, china cabinet, bar cabinet, etc. Gouffé plaque label on left door interior.
Maison Gouffé
Maison Gouffé located at 46-48 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris was a famous cabinet maker in the 1930s and its Contemporary Furniture Department was directed by Jean Royère. Royère, often perceived as outside of the modernist trajectory ascribed to twentieth-century design, was nonetheless informed by and enormously influential to his peers. Taking on the mantle of the great artistes décorateurs of 1940s France, Royère’s success continued with great vitality into the second half of the twentieth century. His luxurious style soon caught the eye of the world’s elite and he began designing couture furniture and spaces for the likes of King Hussein of Jordan and the Shah of Iran.
