The back was replaced in the early 1900s and was done well. Two drawer bottoms are replaced, perhaps at the same time as the back. There are 7 handles that have lion faces and one that is a similar shape but without a lion. All the handles are antique from the early 1800s, though I don't believe any are original to the chest. Other than that there are small scratches, marks, and minor veneer damage that you would expect from a piece that has been around for 250 years. less

This chest has real character! The broad spaces beside the drawers is an incredibly unique design choice that is accentuated by quarter-fan inlay. The drawer faces and top edge have birds-eye inlay banding, creating a captivating effect with its contrasting tone. The tall feet and slim depth of this chest give it graceful proportions. The lion face handles (from the early 1800s as well but not original) add an air of regality to an already well-ornamented piece.
So why Connecticut? The use of white pine secondary wood and the birds-eye maple inlay point to a New England origin and the mahogany and extensive inlay indicate coastal city access. Regionally, Connecticut was known for producing furniture with quirky design elements, so the broad spaces next the drawers is just the type of design that would fit into those tastes. More convincingly, the extensive use of quarter fan inlay was especially popular in Connecticut, making it the most likely area of origin.
Built in the early 1800s with incredible style and quality, it is a stunning piece that will fit into any space! less
