Rare coffee table designed by Ponti in 1953 for and originates from the Royal Continental Hotel in Napoli. The table is purchased directly from the family and comes with a certificate. The table has beautiful details like the dovetail connections and the brass knob that holds the glass top in place. But the most interesting feature of this table is the a-symmetrical shape, the star formed structure appears to be symmetrical as in fact it is not. In that way Ponti makes you think about how it was made and why. The table’s structure is made from solid cherry wood with original patina. The top is a glass rounded triangle and has a small inner crate which is difficult to notice. The Royal des Etrangers (later Royal Continental) hotel, a luxurious 19th-century building in Naples, housed illustrious figures like Oscar Wilde until it was tragically destroyed by fire during World War II. In 1949, engineer Fernandes acquired the remains and began a reconstruction project, aiming for a high-class establishment with modern amenities. Architect Ferdinando Chiaromonte led the project, with renowned designer Gio Ponti overseeing interior design, including relocating the rooftop pool for a panoramic view. Ponti's innovative approach attracted Fernandes, who entrusted him to design and furnish the hotel's interior, pool, and logo. Ponti's designs were executed by Cassina next to custom furniture like this table. His work at the Royal Continental and later at the Parco dei Principi hotel showcased his ability to harmonize with Mediterranean colors and surroundings, shaping what is known as "Ponti Blue." This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
