A powerful and lyrical figural work by this important Haitian Modernist who studied in Paris and exhibited with success world-wide.
Born in Port-au-Prince, Lazard first studied at the Centre d'Art and the Foyer des Arts Plastiques in Port-au-Prince for five years before receiving a scholarship (1951) to study at the École Supérieure des Arts Modernes in Paris. After his return from France, Lazard founded the Brochette Gallery with Roland Dorcely and, subsequently, settled in the United States. He continued to exhibit internationally with success including in Europe, the Caribbean, North America, and Brazil. His solo gallery exhibitions include at the French Institute in Mexico, the Paul Robeson Multimedia Center in Washington, D.C., the Zegri Gallery (1961), and the Studio Museum in Harlem (1969). "Against a peculiar and highly personal blue background, Lazard draws arabesques inspired by forms occurring in Haitian life," says art critic and author, Gérald Alexis in his book "Peintres Haitiens"
