A gorgeous, rare and super-stylish mid century bureau secretaire desk by a top danish designer in lovely vintage condition. Designed by the much-heralded arne wahl iversen and made in 1960s denmark by high-end firm vinde møbelfabrik, this stunning, versatile and achingly cool model 70 desk will add quintessential scandinavian style to any interior.
beautifully crafted from richly toned and exceptionally grained teak wood, this is an exemplary example of scandinavian design – it marries elegant minimalism with super practicality, all expertly crafted from gorgeous natural materials into a superb space-saving desk.
we love the elegant, stripped back design and versatile nature of this piece. It makes a wonderful modern desk, having a large slide-out main desk shelf and an upper flat top for a computer monitor, with two upper drawers and a cubbyhole for desk items and two large lower drawers, including a lockable drawer with original key. Its compact size will fit most rooms and the upper flat surface ensures it can be used as a stunning console display cabinet-come-sideboard when not being utilised as a desk.
there’s so much design excellence and quality to admire in this superb bureau, which really makes it stand out as a prestigious piece of danish design: from the graduated waterfall effect of the two surface areas, adjoined by a lovely ski-jump curve, to the use of dovetail joinery and subtly curving corners throughout; from the charming quality of the lower drawer handles to the streamlined, angular upper handles, which match the slanted front of the slide-out desk; from the lovely silhouette effect of the lower front crossbar stretcher to the gorgeous rich colouring and superb grain detailing of the wood, and from the engineered perfection of all the parts to the smooth working of the original key – this fine piece has it all!
all in all this is a stunning, highly versatile, rare and outstanding example of danish design at its zenith, and whether being used as a bureau desk or a console cabinet, it won’t fail to be a knockout in any setting.
condition
this is in very good vintage condition. Solid, sturdy, reassuringly heavy and expertly built to last, it has the original locking key which works as it should, and two made in denmark stamps and one vm for vinde møbelfabrik stamp. It has only minor to-be-expected bumps and nicks to show its considerable (pushing-70-years) age. Overall it's a fantastic piece and one of the most attractive and useful scandinavian bureaus of the mid century era, and if well looked after it should be just as fantastic for many generations to come – please see the photos.
